The Perfect Green Tea: A Complete Brewing Guide

5 min readTea Enthusiast

Green tea is one of the most delicate and rewarding teas to brew. Getting it right requires attention to temperature, timing, and technique. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Temperature Matters

Unlike black tea, green tea leaves are unoxidized and much more delicate. Boiling water can scorch the leaves, resulting in a bitter, astringent brew. The ideal temperature range is 160-180°F (70-80°C).

The Perfect Brewing Process

  1. Heat water to 170°F (75°C) - If you don't have a thermometer, let boiling water cool for about 3-5 minutes
  2. Use 1 teaspoon of tea per 8 oz of water - Adjust to taste
  3. Steep for 2-3 minutes - First steep should be shorter, around 2 minutes
  4. Don't over-steep - Green tea becomes bitter quickly after 3 minutes

Multiple Steeps

Quality green tea can be steeped 2-3 times:

  • First steep: 2 minutes at 170°F
  • Second steep: 2.5 minutes at 175°F
  • Third steep: 3 minutes at 180°F

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using boiling water - This is the #1 mistake. Always let water cool.
  • Steeping too long - Set a timer! Green tea goes from perfect to bitter in seconds.
  • Using old tea - Green tea is best consumed within 6 months of harvest.
  • Poor water quality - Use filtered water for best results.

Tea Varieties and Adjustments

Different green teas need slightly different approaches:

  • Japanese Sencha: 160-170°F, 1-2 minutes
  • Dragon Well (Longjing): 170-180°F, 2-3 minutes
  • Gyokuro: 140-160°F, 2 minutes (very delicate)
  • Matcha: 160-175°F, whisk until frothy

Using Steep for Perfect Results

The Steep app takes the guesswork out of green tea brewing. Simply select your tea type, and the app will guide you through the perfect temperature and timing. The Apple Watch integration means you can start your timer right from your wrist.

With Live Activities on iPhone, you'll see your brew progress right on your Lock Screen - no need to keep checking the app.

  • Use a gaiwan or small teapot for better control
  • Experiment with steeping times to find your perfect strength
  • Store green tea in an airtight container away from light and moisture
